Grey hair can be annoying and loss of appearance. The melanin production stops in a particular hair follicle, it means that all hair produced by that follicle will permanently be either white or grey. But white hair can appear at teenagers and people in their 20s may notice strands of white hair.

The follicles generate hair and colour or pigment cells that contain melanin. Over time, hair follicles lose pigment cells, resulting in white hair colour. There can be many causes besides age that result in a person’s hair turning white.

Premature greying in white people can start as early as 20 years old, while a person can be as young as 25 years old among Asians, and 30 years in African-Americans populations, according to the same 2013 study.

If you’re a teenager or in your 20s, you might find one or more strands of white hair. There could be ways on the cause such as genetic, stress, Autoimmune disease, Thyroid disorder, Vitamin B-12 deficiency and smoking.

The premature graying problem is largely genetic. Hair follicles contain pigment cells that produce melanin, which gives your tresses their color. When your body stops generating melanin, hair presents itself as gray, white, or silver. (Melanin also provides moisture, so when less is produced, hair becomes brittle and loses its bounce.) "If your parents or grandparents grayed at an early age, you probably will too," says David Bank, director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic, and Laser Surgery in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. "There's not much you can do to stop genetics but what you can do is to use the product that help for prevention and helps delay the white hair process.

Health problems that may be heralded by gray hair include: vitamin B12deficiency neurofibromatosis (also called Von Recklinghausen’s disease): this group of inherited diseases causes tumors to grow along nerves and abnormal development of the bones and skin. tuberous sclerosis: an uncommon, inherited condition that causes benign tumors in multiple organs (including the brain, heart, kidneys, eyes, lungs, and skin). thyroid disease vitiligo: this condition causes melanocytes (the cells at the base of hair follicles that produce color) to be lost or destroyed — perhaps because the immune system "misfires" and attacks the scalp rather than an infection. alopecia areata: a disorder in which patches of hair may be suddenly lost, especially the colored (non-gray) hairs. This may lead to "overnight" graying because previously present gray or white hairs suddenly become more obvious. When hair growth resumes, it may be white or gray, but colored hair may eventually return.
